This time next week there will be children everywhere donning witches hats, ghost costumes and ghoul masks ready for Halloween. These easy to construct cupcakes are great to make and will be a perfect accompaniment to any Fright Fest or Halloween Party.

In the UK Halloween falls within the half-term holiday, which is perfect as it gives parents lots of opportunities to get creative with spooky stuff whilst keeping the children occupied.

These cupcakes are a brown sugar cake, made with oil, not butter, which means they can be made dairy free if you use plant based milk, and plant based butter in the frosting.

I added a hint of orange colouring for extra spookiness, and if you’re serving to adults you could also add a teaspoon of cinnamon to give a seasonal flavour. I also filled mine with raspberry jam, which surprisingly, becomes a little gory looking under the circumstances.

After the recipe below there are notes on ingredients and hints and tips on technique.
